Polkadot is a layer‑0 blockchain protocol that links multiple specialized blockchains, called parachains, to a central Relay Chain which provides shared security and consensus. The architecture enables parallel transaction processing, cross‑chain messaging (XCM) and bridges to external networks, allowing developers to build scalable applications in areas such as decentralized finance, identity, gaming and asset tokenization. The native DOT token is used for network governance, staking to secure the Relay Chain, and for paying fees or participating in parachain slot auctions.
